Bees!!!
« on: May 08, 2012, 20:39 »
Hi, been down the allotment today kept being buzzed by a bee (well thats what I originally thought!!!), on closer investigation it turns out that some wild bees have decided to set up home in a mound of dirt that I was due to start work on as soon as I had finished planting. Any one got any ideas how long they may be staying and what I can do to keep them happy!. They arent a problem as they dont sting!

There are some bees which do make their homes in the soil.

I've got a few near one of my flower beds.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Could be there all season, clearing the area could be a problem i.e stings. Let your allotment manager know as some people are allergic to stings and he might know a good way to move them on.

The ground dwelling ones don't sting, according to the research I carried out.

Bumble bees often build their nests in compost heaps and the like and yes they will be there for the season in all likelihood. I had my compost heap put out of commission for a season by just this situation. was lovely to watch them. :D
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
