I had to take Rosie to the vets today as one side of her bottom jaw is a lot deeper than the other. There is no pain and it feels like solid bone.
Has anybody else had this problem and what was the outcome?
She is back on Friday for sedation and an x-ray - she could have gone in tomorrow but the vet we saw is off until Friday and as she has never seen such a big difference in two sides of the same jaw.
-
What type of pet is Rosie ?
-
She'll still be growing won't she Joy? Just uneven growth?
-
she is my avatar a Staffie x English bull terrier and is now 4.5 months old.
The vets have given us several reasons of what it could be ranging from - just a deformity, an adult tooth growing into her jaw bone, a tumour, an abscess or ulcer, an old fracture from play fighting with the big dogs or something that is a growth deformity where her other side will catch up.
We had growth deformity with Ollie and her otherside caught up which is why we have waited for a few weeks but whilst Neapolitan mastiffs and Westies are known for this Rosies breeds aren't.

That's what we thought having gone through this with Ollie but this seems to be getting deeper rather than wider and her bottom jaw shouldn't be that deep even when fully grown :(
-
I hope you get some reassurance from the x-ray on Friday..
-
me too, fingers crossed it is something simple. She isn't in any pain with it even when the vet was trying to squeeze and prod it all over. But there was no way she was letting her get her fingers inside her mouth - that giant jaw clamped so tight nothing was getting in there, hence the sedative being needed and not just to get her to lie still for the x-rays ::)
-
Bless her. :)
-
Hope it goes well at the vet's, worrying I know.
My kitty is awaiting a general down the vet's, as we speak. :(
-
oh no, whats the matter with her? hope it's nothing serious :(
-
Worrying time for you joyfull, hope it is good news on Friday. ;)
Hope that kitty is fine too spottymint. :D
-
Do hope it's nothing more than uneven growth joyfull - really worrying for you. You'll be relieved to have an answer on Friday. Best wishes to you and Rosie Posie :D
Hope kitty is ok spottymint. :)
-
It's a kitty we took in, she has bad teeth, so gone in for a dental. Teeth cleaning is ok, just the anasetic is a worry.
We have none of her history, how old she is or if she has had an op before. We think she is speyed ?
Vet reckons she is a lot older than our other cat, who is 10, so maybe very old.
No news, so sounds good.
Hope Rosie's visit goes well & it's nothing too serious.
-
will be keeping my fingers crossed for both of you.
-
well she is at the vets and I am sat here waiting for some news - why does time go so slowly at times like this :(
-
It's not a nice feeling. Hope everything goes well.
-
all my paws are crossed!
-
Have just had a call from them - it's not a old fracture, or her teeth growing wrong nor is it an abscess. It appears to be a jaw abnormality where it is growing into the wrong shape. However I have just given them permission to do a biopsy to see if it is cancerous and the results of that won't be known until it has been to the lab :(
-
awwwww poor rosie....sending you both hugs...hang in there. i'm sure it will all work out well.
keeping everything crossed for you.
-
I am hoping that if it is cancer then we have caught it early and they they can do something about it :)
-
So sorry joyfull, hope the lab results are clear. Sending big hugs to you both.
-
Poor Rosie and poor Joy, know what you are going through ..... the waiting is horrid for you. Hoping results are clear and they can do something about the abnormal growth.
Big hugs. xx
-
Both me and my Rosie (English Setter of 11 months) wish you luck. Pets do worry us (just like the kids do). :)
-
Fingers are crossed for Rosie, what a worry. :(
-
Poor Rosie and poor you Joy. :( I hope you get a clear result back quickly. :)
-
fingers crossed, if it is just an abnormality then that is fine - it certainly doesn't hurt her so we will leave it alone (unless it grows really huge and starts to get in the way) if it is cancer then we shall have to deal with that in due course.
-
Sending you and Rosie hugs, and hope it's the least worrisome problem. Like any of us need more :(
-
Hope it's nothing serious Joy x
-
well, it's not an abscess nor is it her teeth. The prognosis is looking more like a tumour. Apparently there are 2 types that can cause this growth and our vets haven't seen either before. It could be benign in which case we can leave her as she is with a big jaw or if it is malignant then she will have to have half her jaw removed. Results should be in in about a week. In the meantime she goes back on Monday for a post op check up.
-
Hope she has a great weekend with you all :D
-
Oh poor girl, hope you get the result you need. Sending positive vibes,
Such a horrible time for you too.
-
Poor Rosie, I hope all is ok & they can treat the issue.
Horrible waiting for news, been there this week.
My kitty just had 5 teeth pulled, but she's eating like a pig. :D No worries with her now.
Keeping our fingers (& paws) crossed for Rosie. Sending our best wishes.
-
Fingers crossed for you Joy.
-
More good vibes sent your way from me. x
-
All the best wishes for a good prognosis Joy. x
-
When do you get Rosie“s results? Hope all is ok
Pamela
-
Results from the biopsy will be back in 7-10 days. The vets tried to have a look at a sample under their microscope but it had too much blood in it to see clearly.
She has had her metacam this morning and is carrying on as normal.
-
Glad she's home and I suspect, totally unfazed by the whole experience ? :)
-
Oh yes completely unfazed and not at all bothered about her stitches under her jaw. One thing that did make me laugh was that her tail kept wagging whilst they were doing the biopsy and she had been anaesthetised - the vets didn't know how she could be doing that
I do have to stop googling though about the possible outcomes though as my mind goes into overdrive :(
-
I hope it's benign Joy x
-
Best wishes for you and Rosie - thinking about you both.
-
thanks everyone. I am trying to look on the bright side and luckily Jim agrees that if we have to have her jaw removed then so be it.
-
I really hope it doesn't come to that Joy :(
At least dogs don't worry about things like that. It amazes me how they adjust and just get on with it whatever happens :)
-
Don't even think that joyfull :(
We're all thinking positive and willing it to be something totally harmless. :)
-
keep positive and don't think about the possibility of jaw removal....we're all with you.
-
Still no news about her biopsy and now her stitches are starting to irritate her so we have been out and bought her an inflatable collar - so much better for the dog than an Elizabethan collar.
-
Aw, it looks like a travel pillow. I hope you get some good news soon. :D
-
That's a good idea, I too hope for some good news for you soon. :)
-
Great idea joyfull ..... duly stored away for future use. :D
I keep thinking about Rosie. Do hope there is good news next week.
-
That inflatable collar really is great - she can eat, play and sleep comfortably unlike the plastic bucket types. When we had a dog who had to wear one of those he struggled to get his food and kept bashing into doors and your legs :(
-
Positive thoughts Joy, positive thoughts x
-
I hope that you get some news tomorrow Joy and don't have to wait until after the weekend. Will be thinking of you and Rosie and sending positive thoughts. :D
-
I have been waiting all week for news too! I'm sure Joy will let us know as soon as she gets some ...... the waiting must be dreadful.
Hope Rosie has had the stitches removed and is happily wreaking havoc. :)
-
the stitches are out but still no news. It really is horrible waiting. I have asked at the vets 3 times now for any news and they are supposed to be chasing it up but as of this lunchtime nothing :(
-
Hope all is well. :)
-
whoop whoop - it's a benign osteoma tumour. If it grows too big we can have cosmetic surgery done on her if we want to or if it is hurting her. :D :D
-
brilliant news my dear! what a relief! can it keep on growing?
-
Good news.
Tilly had a Timor removed at about a year old she has been fine since now four years old with the brains of a puppy English bulls never grow up
John
-
I'm so pleased for you Joy, and Rosie too of course. You must have had a stressful time waiting for the results.
-
Good news Joy! :D A relief for you. ::)
-
yes plum it can keep growing but there really is no need to do anything unless it starts to bother her, how she looks really doesn't bother us nor her so we won't have anything done purely for cosmetic reasons.
John, glad to hear your Tilly is ok now. Rosies mum was Staffy x English Bull Terrier but we don't know what her dad was.
Thanks maxyboo and Argyllie yes this last 2 weeks have been really stressful just waiting for the results so now I am typing with a stupid grin on my face.
-
:D :D :D :D :D
So pleased with your good news, hope you have a really enjoyable weekend. Big hugs for both you and Rosie. :D
-
:D :D :D thank you :D :D :D
-
Excellent news! :D Now you can get on with enjoying the ....err...Summer. ::)
-
:D :D :D :D Brilliant ..... I'm so pleased and relieved for you.
Big celebration in order for tonight I think
-
That is wonderful news - what a good start to the weekend.
:D
-
sooooooooooooooo happy for you ......hugs to you both
-
That is wonderful news
-
Fantastic news Joy, really fantastic :D :D :D
-
Really pleased to read that Rosie is OK :D Great news :D
-
thanks guys :D :D :D
-
Dont know how i came to miss this until now. Started reading at the first page and couldn't wait to get to the last to see if it was good news. Thankfully it is, what a relief for you. Terrible thing to have to go through for both the humans and Rosie. I'm so pleased for you all.
-
Rosie seemed oblivious to it all and still likes going to the vets which is a good job as her next visit will be after she has had her first season to be speyed. Me on the other hand was a nervous wreck and I'm sure the vets are pleased they have finally got some peace from all my phone calls badgering them for the results.
-
Phew :D
-
Very good news, Joy.
-

Why do they have to wait till they have had a season? They say the same here, I wonder how many dogs get pregnant while “waiting to be done “
So glad Rosie is ok, bet your bank balance heaved a sigh of relief too!
Pamela
-
sure did pamela - we were banking on it being at least £1500 for the op .
We had one dog done before her first season (we also had a dog at the time) and were warned that as she was so young and small they may not be able to remove all her bits and they were right. Every 6 months she must have given out the scent of being in season as we had every dog from miles around come visiting so we will wait until Rosie is a couple of months after her season before getting her speyed.
