oh no! prolapse!!
« on: July 04, 2012, 21:53 »
just got home to find cluckers wobbling about with blood from her rear end. Betty would'nt stop pecking at her. taken her away from the others and realised she's prolapsed.
cleaned her with warm water, held her upside down and gently pushed it back in, came out a couple of times. have put her in dog box in shed with some water and mixed corn. hopefully she'll be ok.
have i done right to put her in the dark? my idea is that she'll stay calm.
should i use prep h on her?
what else can i do?
please, help would be appreciated, we've had a trouble free first year with our 'ladies' so am a novice with problems  :(

I know I'll become addicted, i'll just have to move house...
It starts with 3!!! (june 19 2011)

Try searching chicken prolapsed vent treatment on google. Loads of info on there including YouTube videos.

You're doing OK. Don't be in a rush. Clean daily with a little dettol in warm water. Prep H or similar is fine and sugar is good - just shake on, it helps reduce the swelling. Wait until the prolapse is starting to reduce a little before trying to push back again, then put on the ointment and hold a pad over the prolapse and gently keep pressure on. If it doesn't want to go then leave another 24 hours. Avoid fingers as it is easy to damage or push sideways.
Feed whatever she'll eat. Our last one went off pellets and corn - perhaps she associated the food with the problem - so gave her lots of soya milk and little bits of everything to keep her going.
Best of luck.
