orange runny poo!
« on: April 16, 2007, 09:46 »
Hello, I'm new to this forum and new to hen keeping!

We got ourselves 6 hens last week from the Devon Traditional Breed Centre at Crediton. They are 12 weeks old: 2x cuckoo Marans, 2 x speckled Sussex and 2 x Wellbars. We love them already!   :)

One of the Sussexs has had very runny orange poo since she arrived. The Breed Centre said that we should mix some bio yogurt in with their food (grower's pellets) and that she has Toxicilosis (not sure of spelling!). If shes not better in a few days we should return her and get a new one. Yogurt doesn't seem to have worked, and hen seems fine otherwise (eating lots and generally bullying all the others!).

Does anyone have experience of this and was the hen ok in the end? Don't really want to take her back, poor love.

Many thanks

Kate

Well I'm not an expert on orange runny poo either, but with 65 hens, you can hardly ever tell who pooed what anyway!!!

But Munty, whose not around at the moment as his PC is ill, reccomends apple cider vinegar to get rid of bugs in their tummies, so perhaps its worth a try?  I bought some from the supermarket, but Aunt Sally says you can buy the unrefined stuff in horsey shops, cheaper, so that's where I'm headed tomorrow!!!

Good luck, hope she is okay.

Oh and hi and welcome!!!!!

I've not heard of Toxicilosis.   Did they say coccidiosis  :?: Which can be treated with anticoccidial drugs.  You really need to check what they say it is.

Yoghurt would just help to rebalance the gut bacterial population, as it does in humans.  But I don't think it would really have a perminent effect.

I love chooks but I honestly would be tempted to take her back and swap for a healthy one.  :(
