Eye welded shut following pox
« on: November 04, 2012, 10:18 »
Hi all

Really need some advice here. Last week I posted about our SLW with suspected pox. She has been in isolation. Treated with iodine and salt water. The pox scabs have now fallen off but the eye underneath seems welded shut. I don't know what to do and our vet is pretty inexperienced with chickens.

We have tried soaking the eye and have read somewhere about using cold tea but we are not sure if it is best to leave the eye or try to get it open.

Please please help if you can.

Many thanks

Hi
Sorry I can't advise on whether you should try to get the eye open but looking at your picture I was wondering if the eyeball is still intact? What do you think? Obviously if the eyeball has burst then the eye is better left sealed.
Hopefully some one more experienced will be along soon  :)

Hi, we once got an ex bat who had an eye welded shut. It was like this for weeks and even the vet thought she had lost her eyeball.  I tried bathing the eye very gently with luke warm black tea twice a day and after a few days she'd opened her eye lid and was fine afterwards.  If you are very gentle I cant see the tea can do any harm and worth a try?

Thank you so much. We think the eye ball is in tact as when you shine a torch on the eye, you can see movement of the muscles.

CattinJ, how long did you soak the eye for each time? How many times a day?

Thank you again for the replies. Getting frantic now!!

1 cotton wool ball thoroughly soaked then slightly squeezed so it's not sopping wet- held this against her eye for 10-20 seconds - not long as she used to struggle.  Did this twice a day.
Just used PG tips tea bag tea, nothing fancy!

Good luck

You can use used teabags as well as long as they are cool.   ;)

The antiseptic properties of tannin, are an active ingredient in tea.   ;)
