Mountfield Monach M1 Rotovator - Couple of Questions
« on: October 13, 2007, 08:43 »
Hi, I'm new here so sorry if repeating something on another thread somewhere.

Recently got this rotovator to help with the new allotment, it's a Mountfield Monach M1 fitted with a Briggs 5HP engine and had been sat in a shed unused for a few years, after a bit of TLC all seems to be running ok and the rotors turn when they should etc but......

There appears to be what should be a dual belt system from the engine to the rotor gearshaft (dual pulleys anyway), but only one belt fitted on this machine.  Anyone got an idea of the correct size belts to fit on this as I should really fit new ones before using it.

The only other thing is rotor gearbox oil may need a slight top up, so is it ok to use a standard EP80/90 gear oil or what replaces the "Castrol Cold Press" specified on the machine?

Thanks

Mountfield Monach M1 Rotovator - Couple of Questions

Thanks for the help on the gear oil Shaun, just need to sort the belts out now.

Now I know it may sound a silly question but how do you change & adjust the belts on the Monach?  I can see a couple of bolts at the back, so is it a case of removing the engine assembly or is the another way?

Thanks

Thanks  Muntjac for the info,  and Frankie if you can find out the belt sizes you fitted to your machine it would be great.  By the way what is the quickest way to change the belts on the M1?  When the clutch/belt  tensioner is released on this machine the single belt fitted is still quite tight, do you have to take off the engine part and do it that way or is there something I'm missing.

Thanks

Mountfield Monach M1 Rotovator - Couple of Questions
« Reply #7 on: October 20, 2007, 20:10 »
The number has already worn off both belts  . But this was covered once before
http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?t=4152&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

I had two belts which from memory were just to tight and the number on the belt  is  A25  &  13 X 630

Hope this helps

Hi,
I have a Monarch M1 with a 5hp B&s engine but this year I cannot get it to go. Over the last 30 years all I have done is chnage the oil occasionally & cleaned the plug  etc & away it goes .. but this year I cannot get a spark. Any ideas? Are there points to adjust? If so where are they?

Regards

I've just cleaned the points on mine by following this excellent video...worked a treat! pAGS3oy96iA

My issue now is replacing the belt. Gonna try muntjac's washing up liquid method as suggested. I tried removing the pulley wheel, but accidentally chipped a couple of edges off it....if it doesn't work anymore, does anyone know where to get a replacement pulley wheel (the cast iron one at the front)? In any case, even if I hadn't chipped the pulley, the angles involved in getting the belts on while the wheel is off, don't allow for the belts to be replaced in this way...so be warned, don't bother trying to remove the pulley wheel for belt replacement purposes.
Cheers.

So...I've replaced the missing belt with a Mountfield MX 553 1M belt. My prob now is that even with the tension pulley fully disengaged and set as far off as it physically can be, the rotovator blades are turning. Anyone had this issue?

are they just turning through friction, if you dig them into the ground do they stop turning, if not you may need to slacken the belt a little.

Slacken the engine mounting bolts and pull clutch lever to see if the engine will slide forward a little,it may buy you a little adjustment but if not you probably have the wrong belt.
