Strawberries again
« on: April 08, 2011, 10:55 »
Well for some reason all three strawberry runners I planted out following instructions appear to have died I planted into multi purpose compost and we have had no frost since I planted them so can't work out why a plant that is supposed to be easy to grow keeps dying???

Any thoughts?

Bill

None of my runners in pots in the conservatory made it either, yet the ones left out on the plot in the cold winter ground are coming up a treat ?  ???

LOL plenty of water but not plenty plenty just enough.

I have strawberry seedlings coming through on my window sill and hope these do better when I transplant them but for the life of me I don't understand why these strawberry runners keep dying if they are so easy to grow?

Best to leave them attached to the mother plant and place in pot of compost, peg down to help it root. When it is established then cut the cord.

These where individual runners sold in bags from ASDA not an established plant.

That is probably the reason they did not take.  Nearly all the plants I have bought from supermarkets have died or not done well.  They tend not to be fresh enough.  Hope you have more luck with your seedlings.

Have a look at this post http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=73797.0 sarah1983jane has some plants for swap.  I am sending her some comfrey and don't need anything in exchange so I am sure she wouldn't mind sending you some plants.
