Lupin seedlings
« on: April 21, 2013, 18:19 »
Hi all,

I have a dozen or so lupins that I raised from seed. They're pretty small, having their cotyledon leaves and one or two proper leaves also. They're about an inch high.

When can I move these to open soil? They have been in an unheated greenhouse the past week or so.

Thanks!

I think they would struggle in open soil at just 1 inch tall tbh.  Personally I would pot them into individual pots and grow them on until they were more like 6 inches tall before I put them out.

Would be a shame to lose them as you have grown them from seed  :)

Thanks.

They are dead easy to grow, by the way.

I would pot them on and plant them in the Autumn, nature's planting time.

As a first timer, I've grown mine from seed indoors on a window sill, but only half dozen and moved them a couple of days ago from seed tray to a trough and small fibre pots, they are only around an inch 1/2 tall.

I was surprised at the length of the root of each one, it must have been at least 12"! Do you think they will grown ok in a 8" deep trough?

They are not in a greenhouse but situated in a sheltered area outside and according to the weather forecast, over the next week or so, there is a chance of frost. Would you suggest they be protected with fleece?

I heard they are easy to grow, in fact my Dad refers to them as weeds!

Lupin are hard as nails. My seedlings have been outside since September last year in an unheated cold frame and practically all germinated.

If they've been grown indoors harden them off to be safe and then you shouldn't need to protect them at all.
