Anyone do dog agility?
« on: September 09, 2010, 22:59 »
Tonight Jem my Springer x Collie and I went for our first agility lesson. Sadly due to the awful accident on the M6 we were half an hour late so only had half a session. But, in the time we had, she learnt to jump over a jump and go through a tunnel. The jump she got the hang of very quickly but the tunnel she didn't want to do at first - kept running round the outside of it to me, instead of going through it. The look on her face basically said "what do you want me to go through there for? This is quicker!" But with the aid of spam, she got the hang of it in the end and was very pleased with herself. Once she did it once she was well away.

We are doing a 4 week course and then she will be assessed and put in a group that meets her ability. I'm hoping she will continue to pick it up quickly!

Anyone else and their dog do it?

I did try it with my Jack Russell once but he wouldn't co-operate at all. He would have been good at it but preferred being an awkward toe rag instead  :D

I watched it last week at Chatsworth Show and noticed that all breeds of dog were taking part and some very elderly handlers, so it really is a sport for everyone. Good exercise all round and very enjoyable I'd say

I used to do it for fun with my collie before he broke...

Now I train other peoples dogs in agility.

Its great fun isn't it, espesially when they get to the point where you can do a full course :)

We took our lab when she was about four, she loved it and everybody loved her for trying so hard. Then the man in charge was away for a couple of weeks and the woman left in charge was trying to force Bonnie to do stuff she wasn't ready for and shouted us down when we tried to explain her background. This woman was very competitive and got everyone's back up because we were only there for fun and socialisation, which is what the course was. We left.

We'd (or rather OH...I watch) like to take the pup now she is a year old, she needs something to think about. But finding somewhere is difficult and we go to bed at 9 cos I start work at 5am. :(

i do it with my 18month old lab he loves it but gets very giddy and jumps up at me when he doesnt understand what i want him to do! we have been doing it about 6 months and he is picking it up really quickly! i started to get abit fed up with it after a couple of months but seeing how excited my dog is when he does it made me carry on with it. we entered our first  club comp on sat (only a in house thing set up by the trainer) and we both enjoyed every minute and came away with a 1st, 2nd 3rd and 5th place in the events we did! i was well chuffed! i think there is a vid of our first place run ill try to find the link!

Well I tell everyone I have a dog with the canine equivalent of ADHD! ::) Can't sit still for two minutes! So I'm really looking forward to stimulating her more.

So tonight Jem did her first mini-course and it was great! The instructor was really pleased with her as she even corrected herself when I gave a command because she was going off course. She said to me at the end, "she is showing all the signs that she could be really good at this"! Very chuffed with her. :D

If anyone is thinking of doing it with their dog I would really reccommend it - there are Alsatians, pointers, springers and my Collie x springer but the parallel group there are even Jack Russells and Pomeranians so all dogs can do it!

I did agility with my collie x and collie years ago, my cross was hopeless but enjoyed herself and made everyone laugh, the collie picked it up on the first night and was very good at it, they didn't have the fly ball then unfortunately, they would have loved that

Eils did it for a few years with MIL's dogs and won some competitions :D
