I use a rigid mesh tied to canes for peas to climb on the short rows I sow. The strings & canes looks loads of faff, plus the string will stretch fairly quickly when it gets wet. You've probably gathered, but personally I don't think it's a good idea.

I'm using the frame but with some netting and I only have a bed 1.5m x 1.2m to play with unlike DD who grows for Britain  :nowink:

I must admit that I decided not to faff around with planting distances for my Sugar Snaps last year and just made a 6" trench and bunged them in, then erected some hedging stakes and bean netting at the same time to support them. I had the same crop as previously.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I have to agree with DD that the Katie method is going to involve a lot of tying in! It's bad enough getting them to grip onto horizontal strings let alone vertical ones!

I know what you mean -- some of mine always make a determined bid for freedom... away from the carefully placed sticks and support netting  ::)

Hi all
I have never grown peas before I brought some from Wilkinson, they just say peas early onward says they grow approx. 60cm 24in so needs only minimal support, sow outdoors Feb to May, but I have sown some in doors first as allotment is still flooded.

Don't know if the support I have built is suitable as all guess work what I have done is put two 2by2 posts either side then a 2by2 post on top then screwed together then pinned pea netting around frame.

Will this frame work ???? will the peas grow up the netting ??? frame size is 4ft wide by 4ft tall, was thinking of planting four plants along the frame.

Why do you need to plant in a zig-zag Patten ??? it says on packet space seeds 5cm apart space drills 60cm apart ???
Is the drills the seedlings ???

Thanks colin

Hi colin

The support sounds fine and the peas will grow up the netting with some encouragement

You don't have to plant in a zig zag pattern if you don't want to, it just helps the seedlings be spaced out a bit. Lines or bands of seedlings work just as well imho

The drills are the little scooped out lines in which you plant the seeds to start with

Hope that helps  :D

Once you have tasted home grown peas you will want more alright!

What variety? No support?? I can't see Champion of England peas doing well on that basis without any form of support!

Nor me.

If growing acres of them, the rows will self-support each other to an extent, but it ain't gonna work with a couple of rows!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
