Two eggs per hen?
« on: May 24, 2007, 08:03 »
Is it possible that a chicken can lay more than one egg in a day?  We had five eggs yesterday, four in the morning and a smaller round one in the afternoon, from four hens.    Is this possible?  I'm certain it wasn't left from the day before, as they sleep in their nesting box and I always clean it  out each day, but it must have been mustn't it? :?

Two eggs per hen?

yep it does happen occasionally,  I had 4 one day from 3 hens, the smaller one might just be "white" inside, lets us know.

The egg cycle of a hen is normally about 25 hours I believe.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

and a smaller round one in the afternoon, :?

Have you cracked open the small round one yet  :?:   I'll bet it has no yolk,  often called a wind egg.  Hens will only ovulate once a day.  It is the yolk that is released from the ovary.  An egg will be formed around any "foreign" object in the hens reproductive system, even a speck of dirt or a pice of tissue.  Do let us know what you find when you open it  :D

We had 2 eggs from our Bovan Nera on Friday :!: 1 at 7a.m and again at 6.30p.m. Both had yolks :D Perfect poached this morning.
Since then her cycle has been unpredictable...with an egg yesterday afternoon and 1 this morning at 11.....keeps me busy guessing when the next one will come :!:

The small one you had in the afternoon might not be a "propper egg".  When you crack it open it might not have a yolk.

These are called a wind egg and are formed around a small foreign body, a bit of dirt or small piece of tissue.

Do let us know if it has a yolk  :!:

Egg peritonitis Alan.  She was very poorly and not responding to Baytril,  It was kindest to say goodbye,  the vet let me hold her while she went.

Hattie is on her own now but quite happy at pressent,  I'll be replacing Gerty when I've made a temporary run to ease the introduction  :D

Thanks for asking  :D

Thanks for your kind words Alan.

Chook introductions are not easy, especially one to one, so not looking forward to that.  Going to start with seperate accomodation and run in sight of each other and take it slowly to avoid too much scrapping  :D
