self seeding flowers
« on: May 25, 2009, 14:05 »
delighted to find self-sown cosmos seedlings in the flower bed today
They join :-  antirrhinum
                    amaranthus
                    borrage
                    calendula
                    nasturtium
                    nigella
                    opium poppy
All used for cut flowers or as edible flowers
All have self-seeded so well that I haven't bought seed for years
Works well in a no-dig bed that is hand weeded in spring rather than hoed

Anyone else use this system?    What else can I add?
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

We have aquilegia popping up all over our garden in various shades from dark red through purple and pink. They look great right now.

We had a veritable forest of foxgloves last year. This year we have a really unusual peachy coloured self set  :D

Try Welsh poppies, Escholzia poppies, poached egg plant (Limnanthes douglasii), forget-me-nots, Campanula latiflora, Bowle's golden grass, Alliums, Cyclamen neopalitanum, Geranium phaeum, pansies, linaria and primulas. All work for me. ::)
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Lychnis chaldeconia (Maltese Cross) will freely seed itself and the bees and hummers love it.

I like the pale yellow/green flowers of Alchemilla Mollis, and the leaves are pretty as well specially if there's been a little rain so that they hold the drops in their middles :)

Honesty, primroses, hazel, yew,  holly, ash, esp dandelions,  all grow here.
