Title: Just extended my plot to include a building
Post by: stickmeup on June 14, 2013, 08:48
I've had my plot now just comign on a year in July, it's been a hard slog but we are getting there, just had the opportunity to extend it to now what will be 3 plots and include a rather large building which has been used for pigeons previously but is quite clean and tidy inside as it has been looked after, needs a bit of an overhaul, but living room, kitchen, toilet/room and storage room will be sorted, well happy

Here's a pic of the allotment how it stands at the moment, you can just see the shed on the right at a geight
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/179752_10151241222682325_947726203_n.jpg)

The shed itself
(https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/1012356_10151243075702325_793666491_n.jpg)

and it's got some decent space in it, and it's well built :)

Focus has turned from the pallet shed that i was building to this, the pallets will be used for decking where the origional shed will be going with some furniture made up aswell

got a canny lil view out of the double doors onto my allotment aswell :)

the hard work continues :)

Mind the Council don't start charging you rates on something as big as that  ::)  :nowink:

Good job you are not on our site, we have a new build that is causing some right arguements and its nowhere near that large.

The one on our site is not huge but it is 12 foot high and the old boys are in outrage as it causes a fair amount of shade.  ::)

Thankfully the site Im on is a pigeon site, so all of the plots basically have/are buildings like this, apart from my main one, which is the only true growing plot on site

My 'plot' (well, back garden) is also a 'pigeon site' and will probably remain so unless some kind soul lends me a 12-bore.....

I could do, its fairly hot in there already and gets a fair bit of light, but with the roof being pretty solid, and pretty big, im not really waiting to mess with it, lol

Perhaps replace a few side panels?

Early tomoatoes... late potatoes, indoor early french bean crop?
Just a thought.

Either that or you could breed budgies.  ;)

So, had it just over a week now, and work has been going strong :)

This is how we started

and now, still needs a lot of work but alot safer instead of having an old gate resting on the beams

Never mind the weeds... what about all the structural repairs, painting and window cleaning. I've seen smaller villages in some parts.  ;)

The bigger building will become a lounge/kitchen/play room for the kids, the smaller building will be for storage of tools and equipment, stuff i need to keep dry etc, got some decking down the bottom for bbq's etc and then as much as possible will be crammed with fruit and veg along with the 2 greenhouses :)

I am so envious of you........and whilst everyone agrees that you have a lot of work ahead of you, involving the children and making it a family thing is brilliant. Looks forward to reading about your progress.

Questions, questions, questions!!! Are you sure your palace is on an allotment site? If you're the only one growing anything what the hell do the rest of them do and why is it still called an allotment site? What exactly is a "pigeon site"? Did you miss the aitch out? Finally, if you Google "Sheds with Beds" you can work out roughly what you can charge.

A pigeon site in the NE of England is a site that has a pre-dominance of pigeon fanciers. We have pigeon sites in Sunderland that usually - but not always have very few plot holders that grow stuff. Instead, their plot is home to their pigeon lofts. I can see the sense in the arrangement as I personally wouldn't want pigeon lofts on our site. On plot holder is causing all kinds of problems with his white pigeons (sorry doves!). So - are pigeon sites allotment sites then? Well you tell me!

Post by: stickmeup on July 16, 2013, 08:58
Exactly that CDave

The site which holds around 30 odd plots is basically owned by people who keep, and race pigeons.  There is only one main 'growing' garden which is ours, but a few people are starting to use spare space and get some veg in, not quite to the scale we have though.  No issues with it being a pigeon site, they are either in their lofts, or they are out flying (so not eating our veg) but we are right next to a park which has a lot of wood pigeons so we take the usual precautions with netting etc.

I suppose pigeon sites arent allotment sites, unless like us, you have 1 growing garden in the middle of it, luckily this meant there was no waiting list, so we were straight in, also the reason we have been able to expand up to 4 plots so easily

Plenty of work has been going on, and will continue to do so over the next couple of weeks/months/years lol

sorted some entertainment for the kids

What scares me is that the building is as big as some studio flats they are selling in London and not too far from us now at an extortionate rate and you can get on an allotment for a tiny bit of money up north

Yeah its a great size to work with, gonna end up doign a lot of the work I have planned over the winter i think, tried to see if I could get some artificial grass yesterday from a friend at work who's husband is a supplier of the stuff, no go though, would have made an awesome flooring for the shed

Trying to decide what to do with the interior walls, a mix of plasterboard and skimming and a couple of feature pallet wood walls are going to be the plan i think

All needs a damn good clear out and a paint, and really need to sort out the flooring front aswell

Title: Pallet decking/seating area
Post by: stickmeup on September 08, 2013, 20:43
Evening all

Some may have seen my previous post about the pallet shed I was creating, unfortunately do to taking a massive building on at the allotment, it is no longer needed, so thought I would do a little update on my decking and seating area

I had already flattened everything and laid down a layer of pallets ready for the shed, not really much I could use the space for and I wanted somewhere for the kids to be able to chill out while we were working if they weren't helping out (ages 3, 6 and 8)

This is how the space looked just as I took on the new building which you can see above on the top tier of our allotment

We decided about the chill out area, and quickly made a change

Idea was to have a seating area with a table in the middle

It stayed like that for a while the main allotment work took over, but it was still used by the kids as was

Ive recently had a bit more time to work on it, so I started filling in all the gaps with broken down pallets (the idea is it will all be covered over like this)

and this is how it stayed until yesterday.

I had received a fire pit from a friend who was having a clear out in his garden, and along with a load of old wood and tree trunks for a bug hotel, I took them home

idea was, to make something similar to this using it

so I took the firepit/bin down to the allotment during the week, and tested it out :)

and so yesterday morning came, was planned for rain, but woke up at 8ish and not a cloud in the sky, quickly got ready, sorted my gear and off to the allotment we go

Time to get a lot of pallets stripped

the stock

and one of the best tools in the world, the scorpion saw

Started filling in some of the tops of the seat, the backs of the seats and the floor

also started on the firepit come table

couple of pallets with the middles cut out, placed over the top of the bin itself to help cover the sides and make it a bit prettier

I then covered the front of it, still need to do the back and the sides, and made a top out of another pallet, which then forms the top for the table, and can be removed to reveal the fire pit underneath

and just as a table

and this is where im up to at the moment, still a lot to do, and need to decide if im going to cover the front bottom of the seats or leave them as they are

I also need to decide what to paint/stain it in, I have some ronseal dark oak which I get for £6 for a massive tub, but I like all the different colours of the pallets, and don't know if I want it all 'uniformed' like the decking ive done on the top tier as below

Ive also used it where ive fitted the new pvc windows, so may be worth just using it, especially for £6 a tub

So, thanks for looking, would love to know peoples thoughts and opinions, Ive put it all here as I like creating full threads/blogs and it gives me something to refer back to, and I love to give people ideas aswell.  Also found an old cable reel lying about, so plan to turn it into a footstool or a table for when the firepit is in use :)

Thanks for reading/looking :)

Bit more graft done over the weekend, had the fire on saturday morning as was a bit cold

had to make some steps between the 2 bottom tiers as the ones that were there were just a couple of stones blocks so not very safe

Made a quick start on my woodshed

Couple of steps in from the main top tier to the main bottom tier aswell, still plenty to do though

Worked out so far its cost me about £45  8)

and finally, me just using it for what its there for, lol

That's wonderful!  You are very resourceful  :)

I can't even get one pallet to finish off my compost bins, never mind all those.

There'll be plenty of them, lol

Need to try and decide what Im doing the inside of the building with, plasterboard and then skim it or something else? Trying to keep costs down as much as possible ideally

Happy new year everyone :)

Had a chance for a little visit over the Christmas period to get up to the allotment, greenhouse is smashed to smitherines which isnt good, need to find a replacement for the glass

Here's where I'll be adding the kitchen window once I get a decent dry day to do it

Been trying to sort out where to put the settee's in the living room, and I think this is the wall where Im going to do a feature wall made from pallets :)

Hiopefully just sorted some double glazed window panes to run down the full length of the front of the building where the current horrible fibreglass stuff is, should open it up and make it look alot nicer :)

Lol cheers Paul hahaha

So, more work done over the weekend :)

Idea was to at least try and get the kitchen window in, and get the interior of the building cleaned out further

Outside before i started

and inside

and after the dindow was added

Had a fire on the decking whilst all this was going on (literally, the outside of the pallet fire pit caught fire so i had to rip it apart, gonna have to think of a better way of making the pit look nice lol, hosepipe came in handy haha)

What you need is to borrowour site warden (you could keep him if you wish) and then you could play hunt the corrugated iron sheet. That'd prevent those periods of boredom and laying flat.

PS You need curtains or blinds so you can see out to supervise the workers but not be seen working hard to organise from the control centre.  ;)

Cor - you're not forgetting this corrugated iron!

Looks like an ideal moment though
