Hi all, you  may know that im really new to this and admit that I started late this spring, but last night I had a quick walk around my plot after work and was very excited to find little white heads appearing on my cauli's and brocolli heads forming on my brocoli and my inside cucumber (the only one which survived) has 3 little tiny cucumbers on it.

I have also been successful this year with 12 cabbages, 6 radishes, onions galore and lots of beans and lettuce.  Im not yet "The good life" but am very happy today, the only thing is it seems a shame to pull things up and eat them when youve gon to such trouble to grow them.

Is this a natural feeling a bit like your children leaving home for university or to live some where else?

hehe thanks for listening

Happy growing love Jools

Well done with the veg , if the cold weather gets to the cucumber plant don`t forget you can put little cuc`s in vinegar for homegrown gherkins. :)

Well done Jools, it's a great feeling to grow your own and everything tastes so much better.  Jules and Ali pick apples from the tree every morning for their lunch and the in laws are still supplying us with delicious tomatoes.  The next step is getting some chickens :D

I hope it's normal, because I always feel like that.

Hi Jooles, contragulations.  Its a fantastic feeling and yes, it is awful yanking them out of the ground.  But if you don't they start over growing and they are only fit for the compost - and its worse when you throw them on the compost - awful feeling.  So start getting used to picking them when they're at their best for eating.

JulieC - there is nothing like the taste of home grown cucumber. Cannot wait until next June until I can pick my first one. Enjoy what you have done this year and hopefully you will do even better next year.

We tried cucumber for the first time this year and weren't sure if it would work up here. They were wonderful! :)

Hi Juliec
I had a similar feeling digging up potatoes for the first time.
I felt like I had struck gold so invited friends and family around and we all took turns digging up the treasure!

Sad I know but honestly it was the most exciting thing thats happened on my allotment!

I stil get that feeling when digging up spuds.

I've still got a couple of peppers left and toms in the greenhouse.  I've got sprouts, celeriac, leeks, swedes, parsnips and fennel still in the ground :D  Its wonderful.
