Title: New to Chicken-keeping
Post by: Frothgar on July 04, 2010, 21:14
Hi, My wife and I are about to get two or three Silkies and I am building the hen-house myself.  It may sound a silly question but could anyone tell me if the perch width should be less than the normal 2" for smaller chickens like Silkies - or does it not really matter? (...just thought: if I were a chicken, I'd like to be comfortable where I sleep!). :)

I'm still new to keeping chickens - but each book i have read doesn't say anything about the perch been smaller for Silkies etc.
Most say 4 - 5cms perch width.

O.k. thanks.  I guess it's not that important and I should be more concerned with getting my money back on the roofing felt that I bought and getting some wax for the roof instead.

Be prepared for them going broody at the drop of a hat, Silkies are reknown for it. My golden silkie lays for 3 weeks then goes broody for 7 weeks! and my other girls think "oooh that looks a good idea" and within 2 wks ALL of them are broody >:(
