wheelbarrow grips
« on: July 27, 2011, 22:42 »
Hi does anybody know where I can get a new set of grips for my wheelbarrow handles? It's a bit dangerous without any as I bash myself on it.

would motorbike handlebar grips fit?
Staffies are softer than you think.

second thoughts no I don't think they would as the diameter of motorbike handlebars are smaller  :(

Thanks to you all. I'll have to measure them to check they're all the same size. I had thought of bike grips but the ones I'd seen on e-bay were too fancy & expensive

My barrow grips fell off too  >:( Couldn't find replacements so I bought bicycle grips that suited best, and because they were narrower than my barrow handles, I slit them along one edge lengthwise, then fastened them at each end with poly cable ties and trimmed off the excess. They're working a treat now.  8)

I don't think I've ever had a wheelbarrow with grips on the handles before, thats a bit posh.

Not really I inherited it from my Dad & think it is a builders barrow.

I sell grips for tillers, and my suppliers have a vast range of grips for cycles and machinery, but almost all are to fit tube of either 22mm or 25mm. Good garden machinery repairers should have “universal” grips in these sizes. Any other diameter will be difficult to get. I have seen hose pipe used as a substitute for grips.

I agree; builder's barrows usually have wooden handles, but gardeners' barrows usually have removable poly-type handles. I prefer the handles as they're ridged for better gripping, especially when you're going down a slope and want to keep control.

That's a great frugal tip! :)

Loads of campanies make grips for vintage motorcycles at various sizes and prices, have a quick peep at the vintage and classic M/C mag's at the newsagents.
A good idea when fitting grips is to coat the inside of the grip and shaft with Swarfega, the grip will slide on and then stick like the proverbial p**p to a blanket !     Cheers,    Tony
