What to do with Small Yoghurt Drink pots?
« on: December 17, 2009, 10:03 »
Dear All

I seem to have an awful lot of those small yoguart drink pots - you know the ones, Actim*l or Y*kult.  There must be something I can do with them, it seems criminal just to throw them away or recycle them (if I can find somewhere to take that type of plastic).

Thought about seedling pots, but they are an odd shape and you would not be able to get the baby plant out without damaging the roots - not much point to that then.

Any suggestions please? 8)
Thanks

Yep - done that already. I must say I like the way they rattle in the wind, so maybe they help keep the birds off too.

Carefully poke a hole or 2 in the bottom, a drill with narrow bit usually works well, and use the pots for starting up seedlings that don't like transplanting. Once the seedling (eg cuke, melon, etc) is large enough, the whole root mass can be carefully tipped out or the plastic cut open, and the root moved into a larger pot (or outside).

Almost forgot - cut off the upper narrow part to leave the useable 'pot'.

our council re-cycle this type of plastic but I know many don't.  They are such a silly shape I can't think of anything you could do with them

Just a thought tho, if you have them for the pre-biotics stuff then Hol***d and Bar***t have the same stuff in tablet form and there is LOADS more active bacteria in them so much more effective.  1 plastic pot, less money, problem solved !

as sloworm says -- I use as tops of canes -- especially in the polytunnel where if you forget and pull up a cane carelessly you can either poke your eye out or damage the poly of the tunnel.

Good thought SMD! I don't know where Duckling is, but we don't have a "Hol***d and Bar***t".... :( Nearest one probably about 140 miles .

I used to use them to store eggs in the freezer. Whisk an egg, pour it in and freeze, then when you are short of eggs for cake defrost and proceed as usual

Thanks Guys.  Very helpful - have decided I will find some of the tablet form and cut down on the waste - especially as there isn't really a good use for them.  Will use some more on my canes and a few for pots - but not going to buy anymore though.

Happy Christmas Everyone.

Hi, just an idea, but my book (allotment bible!) says that I should protect brassicas, cabbages et al with a 'collar' of plastic bottle. If you remove the bottom, and maybe slit down the side (to allow for growth if necessary) then that would make a good insect etc protector? Never tried it, don't know if it's any good, but just thought I'd mention...
