Cheap Shed?
« on: April 09, 2008, 20:36 »
Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone knew of the cheapest shed you can get?  I've no money and don't want to spend much on one for the allotment as you never know what may happen.  I only really want a 6x4 one.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Hi

Join your local freecycle, you might be lucky! I have seen sheds and greenhouses given away, as well as tools and plants.

I keep an eye out

Things on Freecycle go really quick.  You have to be Quick Draw McGraw on there

Thanks though

our local wickes had a 6 x 4 shed for £125 and they charged me £20 for delivery, however even though I had ordered it after 4pm the lad got me on the list for the next day delivery and we were putting it up by 11,20am next day. cheapest I have found in any of the garden centres etc, even *bay was £199 to buy outright.

The only trouble with Freecycle is that I would have to collect the shed and I no longer own a van, instead a little ol' nissan micra (cheap motoring).  So it would need to be delivered, the second problem is will they deliver to an allotment?  Perhaps I should try to build a makeshift shed?!  I'm not a big diy expert though.

If you can find materials, sheds are easy enough - just keeping screwing/nailing till it stops wobbling :) I sink the posts in as far as I can be bothered digging, and just bang the dirt down with a crowbar to compact it. It keeps it from flying away, and gives you a steady base to nail boards to.

If you don't have any proper roofing (corrugated iron/plastic), just use any old wood and cover it in felt afterwards.

If you can do it, all it will cost is a bag of nails/screws (or, if like me, you're even stingier, recycle the nails you pull from your salvaged timber.)

Silly question, where do I get cheap or free wood to make it?  Is it possible?

It might be fun to build my own.

Well, where I am (in North Derbyshire) there are a lot of companies that seem to like dumping their old timber (roofers and the like) and then burning it. I get to their pile before the rain stops and take my pick.

I also look in skips for useful timber - there seems to be no shortage up this way of free used timber (unfortunately, with regard to how its disposed of).

Someone mentioned a while back that hardware shops will willingly depart with their pallets, but unless you've got a good pinchbar, they're difficult to get apart (or, of course, if you get the solid-top ones, you could build just with pallets).

cheers,

Thanks Derek for your help.  I've tried prizing pallets apart before and end up breaking the wood.  I shall keep my out for big sheets of wood!  It is amazing what people will throw away isn't it?!

I'm afraid I have to point to this fine example again:

Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

No it was built by one of my plot neighbours for another one. It was a case of starting with two doors and keep hammering until it was done. The bloke did it all on his own with just a hammer and a saw.

Well it does the job doesn't it.  If anyone else has pictures of homemade sheds that could give me some ideas I will be grateful.
