Where can I find Bay trees for cheap?
« on: May 25, 2014, 16:32 »
Even Aldi were selling small Bay trees for £20 (or more) each. Anyone know where I could find one for less? Or is it best to grow them yourself from seed/cuttings?

You can buy small ones to grow on for £3 on ebay (7cm pot), if you want it for cooking.  I bought a one in an 30cm pot for about £17 last year, its about 40cm high and has more leaves on it than I'm likely to need.

But if you want a well grown one then you probably will have to pay £20ish or more

Thanks Annen. Yes, it's for cooking, and small is fine. I'm happy to do the bulk of the growing myself.

I bought one from ebay, but I wouldn't say no to another if I found one in the reduced section of a garden center!

That's good to hear chrissie B - mine arrived today and it's also tiny! There are 3 or 4 leaves on it, and since it's so small I'm hesitant to put it outside just yet in case something comes along and munches all the leaves. At the moment it's sat by a sunny window in our tool shed. Has anyone got any advice what (if anything) to do with it?

Put it outside in a sheltered spot and careful not to overwater it. It'll soon grow

Thanks Sunshine. I suppose "dappled" sunlight would be ideal, at least while it's small? Would it be a good idea to pot it up into a large pot? I always worry that small pots might easily dry out and kill the plant!

I currently have one in a ten inch pot, that has been in there since it was about a foot tall --- it is now six feet high  :nowink:

As long as you don't overwater yours and the compost is free draining, it will be fine in a larger pot, although obviously you don't need to use one as large as ten inches!! Dappled sunshine sounds just right
