"Grass compost"
« on: June 19, 2010, 17:46 »
Apologies if this has been covered, but I'm brand new and didn't fancy reading hundreds of posts in hope of finding the answer.
I appreciate grass cannot be composted alone, a recent "Google" suggested adding "browns", would a mix of grass mowings and bark, or shavings (NOT sawdust) be viable?
If so any idea what proportions and for how long?

Ah yes saejtin, the old H.C.A. I'd forgotten that, even though I use it on my "ordinary" compost.
I think I may buy/scrounge a bag of shavings, try 50:50 without then with HCA
(Human Compost Accelerant  :D )

Hi, I would think bark would take too long to break down, but shavings should work. Not sure of proportions - I think grass is very nitrogen rich, but then shavings are very carbon rich. Interesting discussion though - I read something on the net about rotting down cardboard with just something else, but then couldn't find it again. Trying it with urine - doesn't look promising so far!
Cheers Alison

Corrugated cardboard works well if you have enough, just tear it up and mix it with the grass clippings.

I have an old industrial paper shredder- so card, paper, non-shiney junk mail, egg boxes and paper bags etc all get a visit to it before a trip to the garden darlek.

Did resort to a tube of 'Compost accelerator' when started with darlek to kick start things, and its brewing nicely now (while I consider sneaking a second one in while OH is not looking!) :)
Very often quite lost- would be more lost if I could work out where I was!- But always find my way home.....
