Iv'e just returned from a weeks holiday to find my cabbages have split, I suspect the splitting is caused by the pressure of excessive water taken up after the heads are solid, but what can I do to prevent my cabbage heads from splitting in the future?

What variety are these & when did you plant them?

Duncan and hero which were planted in the greenhouse in November for over the winter then planted outside in march, they looked perfect 10 days ago, returned from holiday to find them all split.

Sometimes its due to overwatering, when the leaves can't hold so much moisture and the whole head splits, or it's heat. Some varieties just don't sit in the garden as well as others.
