Post by: logi06 on July 10, 2019, 12:59
Apologies if this has been on but I couldn’t find anything
Can anyone tell me why my red cabbage are only growing massive leaves and not forming heads
Thank you
J

They will heart up later in the year, and if they have massive leaves the chances are they will make good heads too. Mine have started curling inwards at the centre slightly, so have a look and see if your are … the start of the hearting up process

Agree. Well too early to start worrying about heads not forming. Mine only went in as seedlings a couple of weeks ago.....

If you have prepared the soil properly it shouldn't be a problem, particularly if you've got good leaf formation at present.

Did you firm them in really well when planting as that can prevent decent firm heads on any brassicas. I literally make a hole, pop them in down to their first leaf, cover with soil, then ram my fists around the planting hole.
