Title: 2 and a half year old asparagus , spear size of a match
Post by: missmoneypenny on March 29, 2020, 14:06
In September 2017 I bought a couple of asparagus spears at a church fete. I planted according to the Gardener’s instructions ( lots of space, a run of compost between the spears, weeding all around). One has apparently died ( no sign of growth this year so far)  the other has this year produced a tiny single spear. Do I have a dud? I could do with the space so if it looks hopeless I will dig up and use the bed for another crop.

Do I have a dud?

Mine is only just emerging, so you could leave it another week or two, but yes, you could have a dud.  After the first year, I would expect to have a lot of decent growth.  If you have other ideas for the bed, I would ditch them.  A couple of plants are not going to produce that much anyway.

Have fun deciding on a new crop and buy some bare-root crowns next winter if you want to have another go :)

Thanks new shoot, it’s shape up or ship out for the asparagus ( most probably ship out).
