Now they have fowl pox :( !
« on: June 22, 2010, 00:40 »
NOT AGAIN!

another sickness problem... is it me or do chickens suffer with alot of illnesses? or am I just unlucky?

Found one of my legbars with a horrid smelling "cheesy" plaques in its mouth, tongue and pharynx. The chick doesn't look too unwell and is feeding and drinking fine. Looks like the wet version of fowl pox.

So I have a few questions: -

1. Is there any good treatment (even though its viral) and will vaccination help?
2. Will it affect the long term health and hatch-ability of the hen and any hen that has contracted it?

Many Thanks

Andy

are you sure it's fowl pox? do they have any warty eruptions and scabs on their combs  and wattles. The yellowy plaques in their mouths can also be a sign of thrush (also known as vent gleet when it is at the other end) so I would suggest a trip to the vets.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Yes I have noticed alot of warty eruptions on more than half the birds but only this one has this nasty smelling White/yellow plaques on both it's lower beak, Tongue and pharynx.

The bird seems well in itself and is eating and drinking ok

has anyone else experienced fowl pox or anything like this before? How long will it take to clear up?

Many thanks once again

if there are any secondary infections a broad based antibiotic would help. The vius can remain in the environment for months and there is a risk of up to 50% mortality. It lasts for up to 14 days from the outbreak on an individual bird.
