Gladioli
« on: July 25, 2012, 19:14 »
HI

I planted some bulbs that are about just over a foot in height, no flowers yet though just the stalks, are the flowers yet to come or have they gone past the flowering season?  Does anyone know?

The flower spike should still be working its way up the inside of the leaves.

Cheers,    Tony.

None of my gladioli are flowering yet in my cut flower border - they are a bit late than usual.  Yours sound about the same size as mine, I am not too worried yet, I think they will appear now the sun has come out.

when they are finished do I lift them and put in some newspaper for next year.

I have always grown roses, and summer annuals.  New ones I have tried are stocks which I am not keen on, too much foliage, maybe I didnt get the best variety, I grew from seed.  sweetpeas they are so pleasant will definitely grow more of these, although I have only just got my first flower, and now two.  Sunflowers - hmmm, not so sure, something in my garden loves them, only 2 survived and they dont look that nice until the actual flower arrives. Salvia - ok but sticking to the old favourites , some more roses and sweetpeas definitely.

Thanks
Amanda

I must admit, I have never removed mine over winter but my plot isn't prone to flooding or freezing.  The grandiflora varieties are supposed to not be frost hardy.

f your site is well drained, why not take a chance and put some manure over the top to protect them a little?

My flower border is behind last years progress.  Since posting my response, I saw that two of my gladioli have now got flowering spikes on.   I remember that these are behind because I picked some last year to go with some bought flowers for my Mums birthday in early July.
