saving your own seed from the garden

you can only save seeds from open pollinated  types of plants and flowers no good trying to save hybrid types
so choose the seeds from plants that you like to grow  choose fruits-  flower heads -seed pods from a good healthy plant no good if ya got warts on the seeds etc  so be picky
wash any  vegetable stuff offen em, like with tomato's you get all the fruit itself , this needs washing off completly next you need to dry em real well i like to put mine over thetop  shelf in the airing cupboard
dont let em cook so keep it down to about 75f now depending on whats seed ya saving be it pea or carrot  it takesa  few days the bigger the seed the longer ,then put em in a envelope n name em n put em in a biscuit tin n leave till spring in a draw in the house where its warm but not hot or to cold about 30f does me
still alive /............

Collecting seeds from hybrids, is usually said a no go, but can be done, an F1 can have the most surprising results, not nec bad, you just get it dif to mother plant.
Seed that is not in pulp, carrot, etc should be collected(ideally) from plant when fully dry in nice, dry weather. :)
I don't know, how much 30F is, is that 0 or freezing already, but I keep mine in utility, garage, which are near 0C in winter. :)

Heheheheheh!!
If you put your collected tomato seeds in water and leave until you get fermentation going, rinse really well then dry, you'll get more desease resistant toms! I've saved both ways and find that If you ferment you'll end up with the fuzzy coating, like bought seeds.

With veggies in particular, I progressively bought more open pollinated varieties mostly because a) I find the flavours superior to a lot of hybrids and b) seed is pretty true to selection and costs nothing after initial purchase.  Other than a variety of prolific paste tomato I prefer which is a hybrid, I now have all open pollinated (Heirloom) veggies. And I must say that everyone who eats my produce love the taste. So, if your growing budget is small, it's a good way to save. 8)
