New patch
« on: October 07, 2007, 18:01 »
Got a new patch that I would like your opinion on. Approx 30 foot long 18 foot wide. Chickens are occupying a 8 foot square at present.
The land is mostly unkempt grass with a few weeds.

Normally as I have the rest of the plot I would dig over and weed as I go.

However I am still getting over the effects of a rta and am not up to that at present.

The options are

1 weed killer and then rotavate although the other half is not keen on that and feeding the little fellas the produce. I am not that overly bothered about that as I feel that the produce is better still than shop bought . I agree with her in principle but have to be realistic about my physical abilities.

2 Cover with some weed control fabric and see what dies. Then rotavate

3 Just rotavate now and weed as it comes up.

4 Any of the above and mustard seed it  or any other of your suggestions to keep the weeds down and come back to it next year.

What do you think will be the most effective with my time and labour.
Thanks as ever Alan   :)

can you move the hens ? make them into a chicken tractor.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

Cheers ritchy. let them out into a fenced off temporary run.

Surprised at how much they got through in a few hours.I know that 10 of them cleared their run area in a week

The real bonus was seeing how much they enjoyed it. scratching and pecking away continuous.

They seemed to get quite miserable when they went back into there run.
