Colour of pressed apples?
« on: September 26, 2011, 10:21 »
We are giving making cider a go this year as new house as an apple tree and the neighbour has a whole orchard which we have free rein in!
Just one question. We have currently made four gallons and every time we press the juice it comes out a very dark brown colour, you can't see through it at all. Last night we watched Countryfile and it had a more commercial cider maker on it and when it showed them pressing it the liquid was a lot lighter and clear! It looked like apple juice as you would buy it in the shops.
Does it just depend on what apples you use that determines the colour? We are using a mixture of cookers and eaters but wouldn't have a clue as to what the names of them are.
The first batch is a week old and getting lighter in colour now so presume this will be the same for the subsequent lot?!
