Bullying Hen
« on: July 06, 2010, 14:19 »
How can I deal with a bullying hen? Have had 2 hens for last 10 months & poor Penny has hardly any feathers left on her neck , I know that it is Henny being the dominant bully & today I bought a new chook & Henny immediately started attacking her, biting her comb & using her feet as weapons.
There is plenty of room for all 3 in the run & they also have a house & shelter from the sun & plenty to eat & drink.   What more can I do?????????????????????? :(

It is not ideal to introduce one hen, two or more are always better.

In your current situation I would remove the hen doing the bullying and place in a small run on its own in sight of/at the side of the main run for a couple of weeks. This means the others know who the hen is when you re-introduce her.

The theory is that the pecking order of the flock is changed and when the bully is put back in is at the bottom. I don't know how well this will work with a small flock. Hopefully, you may get some more answers! :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

Thanks for that Sassie, I will be able to divide the run as there is another shelter for miss Bully-boots to go into ! I forgot to say that she also bullies the 3 cats when I let her run free ::) I really had no idea that hens would have such different characters but they are great fun & of course the eggs are delicious :)
Thanks once again for your swift reply xxx
