Yesterday afternoon I was on a walk with my family and our dogs when we passed a house that has been standing empty for a year or so.  We were talking about what to make for Sunday dinner when I looked into the garden of this empty house and saw an absolutely gorgeous rhubarb plant going to waste.  Of course, being the thrifty person I am, I went straight in and harvested enough for a crumble for our dessert and a bunch to freeze for another day when I'm having a sweet tooth.  The plant is still doing fine and we got some delicious free rhubarb!

I was going to say something pompous about pinching stuff... but I would have done the same thing.

heehee... I never would have "rescued" that rhubarb if I thought anybody cared about that poor old house.  The lawn went wild last year and I've never even seen anyone come to look at it.  Rhubarb does grow wild near where I live, but the plant at this house was big, old, and well-established.  I was doing it a favor by trimming it back a bit.

lol!  Now you're speaking my language.  My rhubarb plant is kind of puny compared to this monster.

nice one! when some council housing was demolished near here the gardens were stuffed with fruit bushes and rhubarb,wish i has had them realy! when i was a nipper there were some abbondoned allotments in lower bemerton,as kids we grazed the fruits all hot summer long!.

on our neighbouring plot is the BIGGEST rhubarb crown I have ever seen.....the people who have the plot inherited it when they took over the plot last year. They are Dutch, and DON'T EAT RHUBARB!!!!!! I keep desparately trying to see them, so I can ask if I can harvest this year's crop, and then divide the crown and have some on my plot, and give the rest to the queue forming behind me!!! 
But I never seem to bump into them, tho there is evidence of activity. I have now typed out a request, laminated it, and stuck it at the front of their allotment on a stick!!!!!

Plum I've got monster rhubarb on my lottie - inherited but super early and triffid like.  If you want a piece of crown I can oblige this winter.  I'm only down the road in Reading.

ooooh, Newshoot, what a lovely offer!!!! Thank you! Thank you!!!!!! The dastardley Dutch haven't responded to my note, and I can tell they've been down on the lottie. They speak good English, and they are in fact very nice, so I am trying really hard to hate them, but it isn't working. :lol:Perhaps they don't know what I'm referring to!
