This may be a fundamental question, but at what point in the Carrots life cycle - germination to harvest - are they most susceptable to Carrot Fly?

I put a row in over the weekend, but was told by two of the other allotment holders not to cover them with fleece until they had germinated.  My father on the other says cover them as soon as you sow.

Root fly attacks in about two weeks time and again in late July.  They will eat your carrots regardless of what stage of growth they are at.

Has anyone tried the grass mulch, have given up on trying to cover things over as neighbours kittens destroy the coverings.

I have tried the barriers and earthing them over and still they get it,i'm sure there in the soil to start with,havnt tried the bath/barrel method though

In that case I think I will use containers instead of planting in the ground.

got mine in a bath this year as I was wiped out last year, those on our site swear by the barrier method but I thought it would be a bit of a pain if it needed weeding where as a bath is easy to weed if needs be.

I have got a couple of baths that I want to use for carrots. What did you fill them with? I was thinking sand at the bottom, then top soil, then compost. I don't want to use only soil because mine is still infested with weeds.

i have seeds that are about 2 wks old and just through the ground,do you think i should cover them? i have a plastic poly tunnel over them from the start.
