sick turkey
« on: March 19, 2009, 21:00 »
Our Turkey stag is looking very unwell. Standing still with his shoulders hunched and his head drooping.
He was exactly the same this time last year, it lasted about a week and a half until he started gradually improving.
does anyone have any ideas please? we have isolated him and put him in a warm barn.
Thanks

Thanks for replies. And sorry for not getting back sooner

Vember :he is eating and drinking though not as vigorously as normal, his (poops) are slightly runnier than usual but normal colour. I have noticed some mucus from his beak though (same as last year)

Rob : he certainly isn't lonely he has three hens, though I do wonder if our geese have been hassling him as they have been very aggresive (due to time of year) recently.

Otherwise he is much the same, any suggestions greatly received
Thanks again

Is there anything that grows in your garden that he might be eating ? Seems a bit odd that it's teh same time of year and he's got runny poo and mucus from his mouth.
Wonder if he forgot what he shouldn't eat until he'd eaten some.

Just a stab in the dark. Vember will have better ideas.

Don't think so, he just has access to about 1 acre of grassy paddock with the odd nettle.

I was wondering (and much like Rob here I'm afraid!) you mention mucus from the beak -and a an acre of grass -is it possible that a)he could have a crop problem, particulary with runny poos  b) maybe,if has a discharge around his beak, nostrils, eyes -he may have a respiratory infection?Although if he is on his own - and you have not been around poorly turkeys that might rule that one out. Do you have chickens?

Do your chickens free range close by? Or have chickens ever been on the same ground as the turkeys? I am wondering if your stag hs contracted blackhead through the chickens as the symptoms sound similar.

I thought the same Foxy :(
But Looby said the same thing happened last year? Was he with or near the hens then?

Some can build up a resistance to Blackhead. Unsure as to weather this would mean they would get symptoms then perk up again or not ???

I am not sure -I know its a protozoa carried by chickens basically, the weather has got a lot warmer though after rather a wet time, this is a good time for worming free range chickens. It can even been carried on wellies and feeders etc.. :(

thanks for advice, think he is getting a bit better now so fingers crossed. reminded me to worm the birds now so thanks for that. has anyone heard of turkey stags having heart attacks and recovering?  wondered if that explained his condition. perhaps brought on by recent springtime stag/hen activity  :  : (as the same happened this time last year).
