Seeds up
« on: March 01, 2009, 08:30 »
We planted some tom seeds and also we bought back a tomatoe from Skiathos last year and planted the seeds from that (they are up too.) Not sure what they will be like but experimenting! They all seem to be romping away and we dont want them to get leggy! They are in a warm room infront of the window,is that ok as they are about 1 inch tall with 2 leaves  ???We cant go back on hols for more greek toms so dont want to kill em if we can help it.I must admit i wasnt expecting them to come up so quick as they didnt last year  :D

Well IMO apart from frost near the window on a cold night, which would kill them, i think they need to be kept quite cool indoors. You need to grow them as hard as possible.
Also many people on this site use tin foil behind the window ledge to reflect light back onto the seedlings. Also turn regularly to stop them growing towards the light.
Pot them up so the leaves don't touch, if they touch this is another thing that makes them grow tall, it's what happened to all of mine last year :(
If worst comes to worst and they are leggy when it's planting time it's normal practise to plant them deeper than they are in the pot

. Also turn regularly to stop them growing towards the light
if you turn them regularly they may grow straighter but they will certainly be taller as the way they bend towards the light is they grow more on the other side.

the general point is it's a bit early to start tomato seeds unless you,ve got a frost free place with good even light to grow them on
Playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!

I think you can bury tomatos deeper if they get to leggy to start with. Or you could pull out a side shoot when they get bigger and root that to get more plants that are a bit stockier :)

Tomato plants plants take roughly 7 weeks from sowing to reach the transplanting stage. They should transplanted outside one or two weeks after your last frost date .......Sow them 7 weeks before you plan to transplant them outside.

Don't know if this helps with sowing dates :)
