Ill hen or old hen?
« on: September 19, 2008, 09:54 »
Hello,
I am looking for some advice regarding one of my three chickens.
Katrina has started to look quite shabby, feathers no longer well kept, a poo splattered rear end and her crown is no longer a healthy pinky red - it is now faded and mottled.
She is around 5 years old appears to be as active as the other two, although she does seem to have trouble getting down off her perch. It is as if she can't decide when to go.

Is she ill or  just getting on a bit?

Any advice will be welcomed.

Thanks David.

Hello David

She could be going through the moult which really does knock them for six sometimes, feathers drop the comb will flop and like very pale and they tend to look tired and worn out.

Has she been wormed recently?

Never wormed. To be honest I wouldn't know what to do or when.
I just keep them fed, watered and hopefully happy.

Do I need to get pellets or something like that?

Thanks David.

Worming is generally done by adding a powder to their feed or giving them a bit in a grape or something like that as a treat. Done for a week.

There is loads of information in the poultry info section.
Unfortunately what most of us seems to use (flubenvet)comes in a pretty big tub (although still pretty cheap and lasts for ages) but according to Aunty Sally the manufacturer is going to be bringing out a smaller size.

Don't know much about chickens but if you decided to worm yours you could always pop over and borrow some of my flubenvet.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
