Moulting question
« on: September 14, 2008, 21:17 »
Do the girls moult at any time of year? Our garden looks like we had a pillow fight and we have one very scruffy looking chook who is dropping feathers, is this ok for this time of year? I know there's nothing we can do about it, just thought maybe they'd moult as the weather warmed up, not cooled down!!!

I think one of my hens has started moulting, theres quite a few feathers in the coop.
Im a bit concerned because she doesnt seem herself. Her comb is pale and her tail is quite low. I think she has stopped laying although i cant be sure as theres eggs i just dont know who has laid them!!!! Shes eating and drinking, digging etc.
Is this normal???

Hi Louise

The comb does usually go pale when they stop laying and they normally stop laying when they moult.

If there's feathers floating around in the coop I'd say yes she's moulting :D

One of my hens is moulting sooo bad she looks like a batt rescue, and she's been a bit down in the dumps.

Cat food is good for birds that are moulting,  gives them extra protien :)

Hi Louise

Mine has been exactly the same.  Been going on for a couple of weeks now and she has been rather down in the dumps and feeling sorry for herself although she seems to be picking up a bit the last day or two.  Feathers all over the coop, pale comb, looks a bit raggedy and a bit lethargic.  She's been happy to sit in the sun on a log and watch her sister do all the hard work but still eating and drinking.

I did check her over very thoroughly though earlier on just to make sure she hadnt picked up any crawlies, or had anything out of place, gave the coop a thorough inspection too just to make sure so you may be wise to do this if you haven't already.
