Chick down??
« on: August 14, 2008, 17:20 »
This year I've had a few babies,
I noticed with the Geese that the females seemed to keep the down(fluff) round their heads longer than the males.
Thinking this was maybe just a coincidence??

Now I have 4 Buff Orpingtons, I'm thinking that I have 3 males and a female,
Intrestingly the one I think is female (smaller ish comb) still has some fluff on it's head?????

Anyone else spotted anything with their chicks???

hmm would be interesting to see if you are right.. you'll know in time of course. :)

not sure what the differences are with my chicks yet, they are too young to be losing their down though do lose some fluff now and then. Will keep an eye on them though.. we have one much much smaller than the other but it holds it's own and is getting bigger so that's something. :)

Would love to know but all mine have been boys
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

cant help at all on this one but thought I would mention that Tallulah who I posted piccies of.......isnt growing. Also, she only has feathers on the tips of her wings and on her thighs. The rest is really fine down :( and I mean, really fine down with pink patches. I have had to bring her in today  she was trying to get warm, even under other chicks  hope she picks up but has anyone had experience of this :?:
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

Sounds a bit like Titch, being so far behind her siblings.

Did I hear Titch ??

Maybe there's only a certain amount of material for each brood and when they've nearly run out, they stitch together a half-sized model.
