Picking asparagus
« on: May 22, 2013, 21:26 »
Ok.  2 years ago I planted 2 year old crowns. I let every one grow into ferns.  This year I have harvested them as they have come up (and they are lovely!) but now I'm wondering if its ok to pick all the shoots and then let them fern at the end of the season, or if I need to let some ferny bits grow right from the start?  Advice appreciated please!

Agreed. We stop by July 1st and let them fern up and recover.

Great thanks, it's so good to have someone to ask, you can't ask a book!

And there is nothing like the taste of your own asparagus too  :D

This is our first serious cropping year from a new bed, and it is lush  :D :D

The traditional day to stop cutting is the longest day, however with the late start this year, I'm going to sneak a week or so beyond that.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

this may be a silly question but.....how many spears do you get from a crown, roughly?ive wanted to grow it but didn't think it was worthwhile.

Well none to start with, but mine have been in a couple of years and so far I have had between 3 and 5 spears per crown this year.  I got lots during  that warm coupe of days we had, but they are much slower now.  I'm hoping they are just being sensible and staying under the ground in the warm... But I'm a newbie, so I don't really know!

so you need a pretty large bed with lots of crowns to get lots then or do the crowns produce a few crops in the season?

Well I'm reliably informed that I can continue picking until the end of June, and that the crop improves as the crowns get more established.  I'm hoping for lots more this year and as much as we can eat next year (and thats a lot!)from a raised bed 3.0 by 1.2. With 20 crowns. Must learn how to copy the posting that I am responding to into my reply........
Oh, and the ones that I ordered from the kent asparagus farm are soon much better than the ones in packets from the garden centre but a bit more expensive.

You can get 10-20 spears from each crown once they are well established. I have 24 crowns (a bit squashed together) and am harvesting 6-12 spears every few days...once it warms up may be that amount every day or so...

keeping the bathroom window open  ;)
