Post by: jessicats mam on May 20, 2012, 18:23
Hi, need a bit of advice on my magnolia susan, i've it had 2 years now and whilst most magnolia have all bloomed mine is still very bare and only just coming into bud, the soil is kinda clay-ish and does get a bit watered logged, any suggestions as what i can do to encourage it to be a bit healthier

1. Whereabouts in the country are you?  Could you add your general location to your forum profile, please?  Just click your username to edit the profile.

2. Where is the magnolia situated?  Does it get the early morning sun?

3. Have you done a pH test of the soil where it is growing?

I'm having the very same problem, started to bud then nothing, I was just guessing it was a cold snap. had heavy frost Saturday night. But interested to know different. Mine is getting sun(when it comes out lol) at lunch time(12pm) till about 3pm at the moment. Thanks and sorry for the hijack. ;)

Hmm.  It could be a number of things:

a) it's still young and getting established.   The RHS site (http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/Profile.aspx?pid=599) says newly planted trees can take a few years before starting into flower.

b) it is too waterlogged - do the leaves look healthy?

c) it needs a feed with ericaceous plant food

d) the soil is the wrong pH.  It needs an alkaline soil rather than acidic, so a pH of over 7.

I'd be tempted to opt for a) given you've only had it a couple of years.
