Ive bought loads of POL chooks in my time, all from the same breeder and have usually had eggs within a couple of days. Its the 18th day now and Im still awaiting a little present from Blondie, Sprinkles, Rusty and Ruby. I bought eggs (horror) on Monday and will have to buy more tomorrow. The girls are large, their combs are growing well, they eat and drink well and have settled in beautifully.
Now call me impatient, but its nearly 3 weeks. OH is threatening to show them the Paxo box!
-
Are you sure they're not laying their eggs somewhere you haven't found yet?
-
They are in an enclosed run following my recent troubles, Ive searched the henhouse high and low. Its a real puzzle! I know they are girls though, so that's okay!
Im just off to look in more nooks and crannies before I go to the shops to buy more eggs!
-
Mary, one of mine laid on day 20, so fingers crossed for you! Are they crouching when you pat them on the back? I heard this was another signal.
Good luck that you will be having many an omlette!
-
Is the eggcup full today?
-
In my dreams!!! >:(
-
Should be any day now... I got another very small one..... the two so far almost make one ::)
-
I thought my hens were never going to lay! I got them in November and they didn't lay until February!!! Aged about 30 weeks. They are Pure Breeds which I now know can take longer to start laying! You will get there in the end and then find you have so many eggs you don't know what to do with them all :D :D
-
I told hubby on Saturday after spending a shedload at the supermarket on free range eggs, that I'll never complain about being over run with eggs ever again.
-
Hey Mary,
Any eggs yet? My three babies are all laying now I think.... lots of baby eggs now, all sweet little things but have to adjust the recipes now!

Oh very funny Alan..eggs my a*se. They are such happy chooks, but I wonder if they are shy about laying infront of each other. Before my latest troubles, my girls were fully free range, and they used to find a little space under the lip of the barn to lay. Now they are in a run there is no such privacy, although there is a second small chook house we call the maternity wing for the broodies when we get them. Didnt Diana Ross sing a song called "I'm still waiting"? Ive taken to humming it when I go to see the little babes.
-
mmmm maybe the song isn;t right for your ladies.... are you singing in the right key?
What about the song...... chick chick chick chick chicken.... lay a little egg for me......
-
Nah - you need the birdie song

NMary I was thinking of you today and wondering if your eggcup floweth over, obviously not. Now I have decided this is good news as the longer you wait the more you will enjoy your first egg (hopefully). Also, as your hens are late starters they will lay for longer than you expected. All positive stuff don't you think, you are sooo lucky? We should guess the date and time of your first egg - 15th September @ 9.32 AM. Sorry I didn't mention the year :D
-
17th Sept at 13:00hrs ::)
-
The answer is still NO!
I even bought some artificial ones and put them in strategic places to try and give them the idea. All they did was cover them up with straw, no doubt they were making the girls feel guilty!
Im getting used to supermarket eggs now, how sad is that!
-
When mine go off lay OH stomps around saying 'right no treats till you lay something'. Then he caves in and they just hoover down whatever then walk off practically blowing raspberries.............they feel no guilt chickens ;)
-
You're dead right New shoot, they have NO shame!
-
How old are your girls Mary? I had an email from a lady who bought 5 of our hybrids at 14 weeks. they are now 25 weeks and STILL not laying! :(
-
When we had our first hens they were 9 months old and still not laying. I was told by the person I got them from to stop giving them treats and stick to layers pellets, so I did and they began to lay, but I'm not sure if it was just a coincidence ;)

I dont really know Grannie, I just asked for POL, and I've always had an egg within a day or 2 of buying them from this particular breeder, so I just assumed they were of similar age. They are big girls, their combs are growing really well, so they must be there or thereabouts.
Im not too worried as its all 4 that are not doing the biz. If it was only one or two, I would be worried. Its just annoying that I have to spend so much dosh BUYING eggs!!
-
I went down to the henhouse this afternoon, just knowing that it would be a fruitless exercise, when I checked the maternity house..1 minute egg. I then ventured into the main house and found another 2! These were at least a medium egg size so Im convinced that they came from my 2 light sussex girls.
Im so chuffed, just waiting for Miss Gray and the other newbie to perform and Ill be able to say au revoir to supermarket eggs.
Im one happy little girl now!!! (Well not so little actually, but that's another story!)
-
At last I was beginning to think we'd have to send an egg parcel :D
-
phew, the tension was begining to tell! Every egg I collected from mine was making me feel guilty! :D
-
NormandyMary
So pleased your hens are starting to lay.
I guessed the day 8)
You will be telling me next that your first egg was laid at 9.32AM :D
Hope egg production continues.
-
Congratulations! That's brilliant news. I've been watching this thread for ages wondering when we would see your announcement. Mine were about 30 weeks old before they laid so wondered if you could have been waiting a lot longer so congrats :D
-
Norman and Mary - have your new girls given you any more eggs? Hope so.
-
After all the eggcitement Wednesday, I had none yesterday, and only one today. Still, Im not disheartened, we're getting there. Im sure another week or so and we will be at full producton, just in time for the winter recess LOL!!!!!(Actually, last year I was the only one round here that was still getting her full quota of eggs. Bet I wont be as lucky this year!
-
Are you sure someone isn't paying you too much sympathy and placing soem shop bought ones in there? :tongue2: :tongue2: :tongue2:
Maybe they were just very young - I had to wait quite a while for mine to start laying, now I am getting 2 or 3 per day from 3 ladies.
-
Yay, I go away for a weeks holiday and it all kicks off, so pleased for you :)
-
Did you have a nice holiday Joyfull? Hope you had a lovely time and welcome back 8)
-
Did you go somewhere nice Joyful :D
-
a week in the Isle of White, where the only rain we had was in the evenings the rest of the time it was nice and sunny :). My friend who looked after my chickens loved it so much that she has requested to look after them next year for the 3 trips that I have got booked and my dogs loved their trip to the kennels, however as nice as the break was it's great to get back home to my pets :)
-
Im still only getting one, possibly two per day.Still, better than nothing.
-
Didn't get to collect the eggs until 7.30 last night and there were 5 (usually 3/4) so that was a nice surprise :D
