I've got a lovely hellebores that does really well in complete shade (well until it got eaten by the ducks).
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Just been planning a shaded (by fence and tree) bed myself. To get something there all year round, have gone for: snowdrops (buy them in the green now- dead cheap on ebay!), pulmonaria, helebores (winter and spring flowering species), primroses (native), lily of the valley, bleeding hearts, foxgloves, persicaria, campanula (tall and creeping), evergreen geranium, hostas, and at the back, ivy, climbing rose, almond-scented clematis. There are flowers out now, and should be for the rest of the year.
