« on: June 23, 2011, 22:00 »
Got bad greenfly & whitefly on plants at minute.  Anyone know any good treatments for this that really work??

Good hosepipe squirting water at them.

Some people suggest soapy water.

What are the plants - there are limitations on using chemicals on some plants.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

They're on goji berry plants and blueberry plants at the minute.

I'd try the hosepipe trick first.

That will dislodge them but they will come back - although easy enough to shift.

Some of the versions of Provado Ultimate Bug Killer (I think it is) might be licensed for use on the berries you describe - look at the label before buying or using, though.  Bear in mind that you will be eating the crop so don't use anything which isn't licensed.

read in another thread, that you can try smash some garlic/very spicy pepper etc in warm water and leave over night, then spread the water on insects! I tried curry sauce on ants but little success

There seems to be a lot more aphids about this year than last - wonder of the harsh winter killed of the good bugs that predate them. I had no aphids in the greenhouse last year but have had lots this year. Dealing with them by a mixture of squishing (yuck), soapy water and Yorkie's hose pipe trick as I do not like using bug killers.

Cheers for the replies.  Been squashing them everytime I see them but it's a bit of a faff on.   I'm no fan of pesticides even if they do say they're safe for food crops.

Me neither where at all possible --- I do the 'squirt and sqaush' approach  :D
