Cabbage whites - getting obsessed now
« on: September 01, 2012, 19:04 »
As I had a lot of space this year where early crops struggled with the weather, have really gone mad with winter crops.

I always have kale and PSB, but this year have green, red, black and Sutherland kale, January King, Savoy and red cabbage, plus swedes and some autumn turnips. Every time I visit the plot I'm cooing over them as they are all looking lovely  :D

All netted but now getting twitchy every time I see a blasted cabbage white hovering near the crops trying to lay eggs through the net.  Found myself today leaping across the plot like a loony chasing them off.  What's the point Newshoot eh    Minute you head home they'll be back laughing their heads off  ::)

Soooooo  drooling over cabbage like it is a prize bloom and declaring war on butterflies.  Who knew brassicas could send you so loopy

You are not alone  :D

I think the mesh defence will stop the butterflies - unless the foxes decide to jump on it again ::)
but the slugs and snails are out in force again

note to self - buy (lots) more pellets of doom asap *cue manic laughter*

  ooh noo, forget about the slug pellets,. must do that in the morning! Just fed my beautiful caulies under the debris netting. Felt all smug that had protected them so well from the flying pests ----- forgot to renew the pellets. AAARGHH
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

I see the little beasties still fluttering - in pairs!! - over my garden and grimace  >:( They did terrible damage this summer but next year they'll be out of luck when I hoop and net the brassica areas.

Trillium - you got me slightly worried there for a moment!

I was just thinking: "Who in their right mind looks and comments on this site at one o'clock in the morning?"

. . . and then I noticed you were from Canada! Doh!
I may be Welsh, but I love ewe anyway!

New Shoot, I got so obsessed with butterflies being able to poke their pointy little bottoms through the netting to reach the taller cabbage leaves this year that I threw a piece of debris netting over the top as well ---  seemed to do the trick  :D

Moths and butterflies seem to be able to access my cabbages/kale/brussels which are under debris net but at least there are a lot less of them and the damage is minimal.
I have my psb under a double layer and they are perfect.
