Brown lettuce
« on: September 16, 2008, 10:38 »
Hi,

I have planted lettuce from seed in a bath, they are now about 4 inches high and have done really well.  I have been thinning them out and eating them as salad leaves but now they have started to get brown bits on the them.  Any ideas why?

Thanks

Val

Well you asked. Generally its being attacked by a fungal spore, the browning is a self defense mechanism. This time of the year its getting damp (very damp in some places) and fungal infection is rife. Once they start turning brown its compost I am affraid.

Especially if they are closely sown for cut and come  as your post suggests, and then the slugs move in big way, once there is some decay.
