Chicken Chat / Soft shell eggs
« Last post by Ouroldworkshop on Today at 20:50 »
Hello, this has been asked a lot but I wanted to check what your thoughts are on a 25 week old hen (Lena) laying soft eggs overnight. she started laying normal eggs about 4 weeks ago. She then became egg bound and we had to help her by clearing out a broken egg from her oviduct. She seemed to recover well, had a few days off laying and then laid normally for a few days. She's now had a few days of no eggs in the day, looking uncomfortable in the evenings and laying one or 2 soft eggs overnight. She's rushing out in the mornings and seems to be alert, eating and drinking well. We've got 3 other similar aged girls and they are laying perfect eggs with hard shells. I'm adding calcium to their water and they have oyster shell grit available at all times. They free range for a couple of hours a day. I'm worried that Lena has some genetic problem that is going to make her ill eventually.

Aurora Borealis  :)

I didn't see any spectacular colours at the weekend, but did manage to take experience them a little at about midnight. Even on that little amount, I felt privileged to have had the chance to witness them.

Not sure that you need bark in the mixture?

Yes to the drainage holes - put broken pots or similar over the top of the holes to stop compost falling out and stop them blocking up.

I don't think it's too late to pot up - it would be different if digging up from the open ground, but repotting doesn't disturb the roots as much.

Cloudy and cool this morning, brightened up a bit this afternoon, but a breeze came with that. So this afternoon's cuppa was drunk inside the greenhouse, not sitting outside on the bench  ::)

9C overnight in the greenhouse.

Chatting on the Plot / Re: How much TV do you watch

I have the TV on most evenings, although to be fair I also tend to have the laptop on. The degree of attention that each gets, depends on how interesting the TV is!

Grow Your Own / Re: Strawberries not thriving

Vine weevils love strawberries, and their grubs do significant damage to the roots.

Nematodes are said to be effective and would not attack other creatures.
