Frogspawn help!
« on: May 11, 2010, 23:32 »
Despite having a perfectly good pond, a dippy frog has left a load of frogspawn in one of my seed trays (it is full of rain water!)
I have topped up the water daily with a little rainwater, and covered it with an upturned hanging basket so the birds cannot get to it.
But, what do I do when the tadpoles emerge? Can they survive it a seed tray, or should I put them into the pond - where I suspect they will get eaten by the dragonfly larvae!

Thanks

Elaine

Hi

They could survive in the seed tray, so long as you provide food & water.

I would be tempted to put them in the pond once free swimming, let nature take it's course.  :)

They do very well in open water butts. :)

The pond is favourite though, the dragonfly nymphs will only get a few.

Hi,
Tadpoles need algae to feed on - they thrive on the slimy stuff that grows on the pond sides, pebbles and plants.  I have to agree with Spottymint and 8doubles that they would be better in the pond.  Alternatively you could put the spawn in a larger container where you can leave the water in for the algae to grow (it grows really fast in sunlight as I'm sure you'll appreciate if you've got a pond!).

I think in a seedtray the water is likely to get nasty pretty quick,  definitly better to put them in the pond.  I'm sure that' where the frog was heading for.  She must have been caught short!
