Large Butternuts
« on: October 20, 2011, 13:48 »
This year I bought a variety of butternut from Wilko as they were the only shop in town that still had any (end of March). They were just called winter butternut. planted my seed 28/3, potted on 3/5,planted out (4) 25/5.I gave them a couple of comfrey liquid feeds and they developed very well but by 3/8 some of them were enormous and I took them off to give the rest a chance but most of them grew very large.I thought you might be interested  and have posted a photo.I do not think that they will ripen (they are in the gh now) so quite useless really but intersting a nd a bit of a laugh!! :)

That looks good!
some varieties do stay green (like Barbara butternut) so perhaps mixed up seeds?

I don't suppose it could be a butternut shaped pumpkin? Have you cut one up yet?

Good crop. They look, apart from the colour, exactly like my only good years crop of 'early butternut', so as mum says, perhaps it's just one of those varieties. Let us know how they look when cut.

We had huge ones like this last year (except they were not green like this ever - started lime green, went whitish and then golden)

This year, two measly fruits only

I hope you enjoy them -- we kept some of ours right through into early summer  :D

I have several butternuts that have just decided to start, and a good crop of 3cm butternuts - I bet the frost will get them before they can grow - so far I have 1 normal sized and coloured one.

My butternuts put on loads of growth and ended up like triffids  :) The only problem was every fruit rotted off.

However, the Winter Fairy squash cropped well, with some fruits weighing 4 kgs. If that is a winter fairy, I won't be growing any winter giants anytime soon

I'm just off down the greenhouse. I won't be long ..........................

judging by the feedback from various lotties in my area its not been a good year for squashes......  dismal in fact.  Out of my two butternut plants and after lots of fruit nodules only two decent sized squashes to show for it, all the other promising ones rotted off...
never mind, always next year  :)

Just an update on my large squash.I have kept them in the greenhouse (cold) wrapped in some black weed fabric in case of frost.Brought one up to the house today it weighed 8KG.Cut it open and it was a very good colour.Have now got 8 portions (for 2) in the freezer. There is no sign of any rot on the others but a couple of them are still green.

I don't think it was a bad year for squashes or even the contrary. Just so it would seem to me butternut types are the trickiest to grow.

My experience too Gobs

Still, I don't let it put me off and I shall persist in trying to grow them.  I did manage to produce two this year  :)
