tomato recommendation...
« on: October 20, 2011, 10:37 »
hi all - on the basis that the clocks go back soon and it's seed catalogue time, can I just give a thumbs up to Cristel, a plum tom I got from our Society Swap Shop in the spring. Beautiful oval tasty and productive....

This was my first year with access to a greenhouse and I grew sungold and was really pleased with them. They ripened early and tasted great. Next year I will grow them again but grow another because I found they were all gone while others still had some turning ripe.

Did you grow it outside savbo or in a greenhouse/polytunnel ?

Grown in unheated greenhouse. As a cordon type I managed it rather better than my Roma which I allowed to run riot! Discipline will be imposed next year...

What size is cristal, please?  the only thing that was good for me this year was sungold and they are still going strong in the greenhouse :)

my roma/legend/rio grande were very poor, and suffered diseases.

i have promised myself that i am only going to grow sungold next year to save myself from dissappointment, although, i bet when i start looking through the seed catalogues, i will order loads of different types ::)

it was a very neat cordon type, only 4-6 fruits on a truss but nice size and very even - lovely and tangy too!

I tried Legend and Sungold last year and didn't like either of them. I also did Roma last year and had a fabulous crop from them. I had several of them in a veggie bed outside with canes and string around the outside to support them, cos they are vigorous and they do need a bit of space. I did Rio Grande, Principe Borghese and San Marzano in my outdoor beds this year and had a pathetic crop, because the weather conditions were just so appalling. I don't think it was an indictment on the varieties themselves, because I also had some San Marzano in pots and they gave me a very decent crop of lovely big meaty toms, still cropping now in my polytunnel.

I grew Sungold this year too and got a good crop but found their skins to be a little tough.

I also grew Gardeners Delight and they are almost as good a flavour as Sungold but the skin is sooooooo much thinner and their texture is alot nicer too.

I would highly recomend Gardeners Delight which will be my majority crop of 10 plants with just 1 Sungold 1 Red Cherry 4 Alicante and 4 Roma

I tried different varieties this year and other than the cherry types, the results were disappointing.  I was holding out a lot of hope in the fact we had a new greenhouse but I found the crop poor.  Previous years have also not been great but mainly due to being planted outside and hit by blight.

I grew again in grobags and think that next year I will plant in large pots instead.  I never seem to get great crops from grobags - despite using them on their side, feeding, watering regularly, planting in pots with the bottoms cut off on top of grobags, etc etc.

I planted:
- San Marzano - poor germination,
- Roma - poor production
- Sungold - ok prod
- red cherry - ok prod
- beefeater - poor prod
- cherry cascade - ok prod
- tigerella - poor germination
- fantasio - poor prod
- pomodora cosoluto fiorentino - poor prod
- sweet baby - ok prod but split easily
- sweet million - ok prod
- tumbling tom (hanging baskets outside) - good prod
- black cherry - ok but not large amounts.

I started them off in February in a heated propagator.

I even bought a grafted beefsteak tomato which did very little (in fact, I don't think it is worth paying more for them imho).

I think I am going to go back to gardeners delight next year and will investigate some new varieties, so will be watching the posts on this thread avidly!

Please feel free to post your results in the "Home grown tomato survey" (stickied on this board) otherwise we'll have two similar threads running together, only one of which will be suitable for analysing and summarising in a few week's time!  :)

We grew Inca, rather then Roma this year. They seemed easier to keep under control and the crop was much better. Considering the appalling summer some of us had this year, our outdoor tomatoes came to nothing until too late. I think Inca is well worth considering.
