Victoria Plum tree looks sick- Suggestions pse?
« on: June 25, 2014, 19:00 »
My victoria plum is very old I think, I inherited it on my allotment. It is very miss shapen and cruddy looking on the trunk but I have had good crops every other year and have done some pruning but this year it looks terminal. Had plenty of blossom but leaves have gone grey and curled up and most of small plums are now dropping off although there are new shoots of healthy foliage sprouting in places.

Do I give up on it completely or would a drastic prune spur it into enough new growth for a decent tree again next year? I have also given it some Growmore.

All suggestions welcome

I wonder if it is Silver Leaf?  It affects plum trees but also other fruit trees too.  Perhaps give it a good pruning now (as in summer when it was warm and dry), burn/dispose of the trimmings, and aim to "open" up the structure so that it allows better air flow.  Also give it a potash feed - this should hopefully encourage flowers/fruit and also help to fight fungal infections.
