Perpetual Spinach, although technically i think it's a variety of beet but does the same job as spinach

Perpetual spinach is quick growing and you can keep picking that right through the winter - mine stands uncovered down here with no problems. You can grow it in pots out side the back door - 1 or 2 plants per pot as they get pretty big.

I've just bought a winter leaf pack of seeds from DT Browns and that included a spinach called 'Ho Hei F1' which is a baby leaf type.
All the seeds in the pack are for outdoor sowing this month or under cover next month.

Hope that helps :)

Shouldn't something on the, er, dwarf side be called 'Hi Ho', not 'Ho Hei'  ::) :tongue2:

I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I am just about to get an allotment and was looking for something to plant.  I am hoping to clear a small area and get the kids underway growing something would you recommend spinach then?  Although we don't really eat much of it - it is a fav of our pet rabbits so I often buy reduced bags of it in Tesco just for them - so be nice for kids to grow something for their pets.

I'm going to go to my local garden centre and buy a few different suitable varieties. This will include perpetual but in my opinion the real stuff is superior in taste. Just wish I could grow it a bit longer before it bolts. That's my experience with spring sown so hopefully this foray Into autumn sowing will be more successful.

We've just planted out some 'Bella' spinach, which we bought in modules.

It's supposed to last through winter, but probably needs some protection in really cold conditions!

l have recently planted some F1 Reddy seeds. Worked well last winter under a cloche for quite a while until mildew struck. Good in salads or cooked. If planted in Spring or early Summer it has a tendency to bolt, but OK in cooler weather.

Sow spinach Medania..........

Quote
It can either be sown in spring for a summer crop, or in the autumn for leaves to pick over winter....... Spinach is frost tolerant and grows well in cool weather that comes in the beginning and the end of the growing season. Medania is a reliable performer and is mildew resistant. Slow to bolt, it gives good quality yields.

I got mine from Premier seeds direct (also on e-bay) who sell 1000 seeds for 99p  plus 55p P&P  :D
