Hiya,

Just a quick question which hopefully someone here has experience of.

Would I be able to plant a tall fruit tree (like a pear or apple) as part of a hedge - I'd have the fruit tree sticking out of the top of the hedge so I'd want the fruiting bits to be over the hedge. The hedge itself would be mixed native hedging plants and would be approx 3ft tall.

We have trees (not fruit) in our hedge. It might take a few years to fill in the gaps either side of the tree but you can certainly do it.

You can have a fruiting hedge too !

i would plant the tree in the hedge line . and plant ash whips tightly or similar next to it ,dont use a prickly tree such as hawthorn ,and definatly not sycamore . just top the ash .or other when its getting to close to the crown of the fruit tree .. grease the trunk of the fruit and try not to let any bad guys climb from the ( ash ?) to the pear leaves

thanks for the advice - I hadn't thought of the possibilities of wee beasties using the hedge as a ladder but keeping the hedge trimmed should prevent that being a problem.
